(PS: This isn't a very good pic but it won't let me upload a new one!)
Okay, so I am SO excited to post my first of many tutorials for you guys to see. I've been wanting to make this for a while but just hadn't had much time. I'm not quite sure how pictures post on here so bear with me. I'm going to post step by step instructions on how to make this beauty but I don't have a pic for every step. (I know! I hate when people post tutorials and don't show every step. You get going and realize you didn't take all the pics.) So here we go.....
CANDLESTICK PLAQUE
Things you will need:
A wooden rectangle plaque (Got mine at Hobby Lobby)
A round plaque (Also, Hobby Lobby)
A wooden candlestick (Also, Hobby Lobby)
A dowl rod that fits perfectly in the candlestick (I used 7/8 from Hob Lob)
Finnial (Lowes, the one in Moore, Isle 48 all the way to the end and left)
Black spray paint
Sand paper (Didn't have any, but just used a nail file. Haha)
Black craft paint
Sponge brush
Stencil of your letter
Modge Podge
Furniture nails (Got mine at Lowes)
Little tacking nails
Hammer
Drill and a tiny drill bit
Some sort of saw
Tite Bond III (I found this at Lowes and it works WAY better than Gorilla Glue)
Let's begin!
1) You will want to start by cutting your dowl rod in half long ways. What this is going to do is add some support behind the plaque. Once you've cut it long ways, you will put some Tite Bond III in the candlestick hole and then add your half a piece of dowl rod. (The candlestick I bought had a metal piece in it, and I just took that out.)
2) While it is still wet, you will want to add some glue to the front (flat) side of the dowl rod and then position your plaque. Once it is in place, you will want to attach it from the back with a tiny tacking nail just to make sure everything is good and in place.
3) After this, you will want to attatch the round plaque to the bottom because the rectangle plaque is going to be pretty top heavy so you need something on the bottom to stablize. Add some glue to the bottom of your candlestick and then attach it to the round plaque. My husband screwed a screw in the bottom at this point too, but it's not neccesary.
4) Next on our list would be to attach the finnnial. This part is a little tricky only because you can split the wood, so go slow. You will need to pre-drill a hole in the top center with a pretty tiny drill bit. Once you've done that, you should be able to screw the finnial in no problem.
5) After everything has set up and dried, it's time to paint! Spray with a couple of coats of spray paint, front and back, until it's nice and coated.
6) In about an hour, that should be good and dried. You can sand paper the edges to add an "old" look to it or you can leave it. I liked the "old, worn" look.
7) Cut your piece of burlap to fit the rectangle. Add Modge Podge to the plaque and carefully lay your burlap on top. Secure it with your furniture nails.
8) This part is a little tricky too if you don't have a Silohuette or Circut machine (which I do not but am PRAYING I get one for Christmas or my birthday.) If you are in my postition, then you will want to just sketch out your monogram and then transfer it with your craft paint. What I did was sketch it out on a file folder and then cut it out, lay it on the burlap and then sponge the paint on. Not very easy, but it got the job done.
9) Step back and look at the finished product because YOU DID IT! Congrats! I will say that Matt helped me with the cutting, nailing and screwing, so it may be pretty difficult if you don't have the right tools. Hopefully, you either have a hubby that's as talented as mine or you are a rock star at woodworking!
HAVE FUN! If you have any questions, feel free to comment and I'll hopefully be able to answer!
****For some reason I can't post anymore pictures to this post. Just the one of the finished poduct. Does anyone know how to add more?****
